Painting the Cornish Coast

There is something about the Cornish coast that draws artists back again and again. The quality of light, the drama of the cliffs, the ever-changing mood of the sea — it is a landscape that never stands still.

I spent a week this spring working plein air along the stretch from St Ives to Land's End. Each morning I set up my easel at a different vantage point, watching the light shift from dawn gold to midday brilliance to the soft haze of afternoon.

The challenge of painting outdoors is that nothing waits for you. The light moves, the tide turns, the clouds reshape themselves every few minutes. You learn to work fast, to capture the essence rather than every detail, to trust your instincts.

Back in the studio, these plein air studies become the foundation for larger works. They carry the energy and authenticity of the moment — something that is difficult to recreate from photographs alone.
